Silver Oak Fans!
April 22, 2003

Attention all Silver Oak fans!  Introducing Twomey Cellars!

The Silver Oak family has conceived a new winery that specializes in only Merlot.  Let me introduce you to Twomey Cellars!
Some day, devotees may camp out over night to secure a place in line at an annual release party for Twomey, just as they do at Silver Oak Cellars every August and February.   But for now, this wine is just too limited!!

You may recall last year I received 12 bottles of the premiere release of the 1999 Twomey Merlot.  It was included in the very limited, one of a kind "Joker-is-Wild" set.  The 2000 Twomey Cellars Merlot is about to be released on May 1st. and although it is still very limited, TWC will receive 60 bottles.  In advance barrel tastings of Twomey's 2000 and 2001 vintages, Robert Parker, of the Wine Advocate, refers to the 2000 as a "sexy, lush offering" and the 2001 as an "exceptionally pure and rich, gorgeously textured wine."

Originally Soda Canyon Ranch, located in the south eastern corner of Napa Valley,  was selected for its Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to be used in Silver Oak's Napa Valley blend.   However, Silver Oak's owner Ray Duncan, with his collaborating Silver Oak winemaker Daniel Baron soon discovered the vast potential of Merlot grapes at this site and replanted with tightly spaced French Merlot clones known for low yields of small, intensely flavored berries.  Daniel Baron's Merlot experience dates back to 1982 when he spent a full year working in Pomerol and St. Emilion.   Twomey Cellars, a Duncan family name, is Baron's realization of his dream to produce world-class Merlot.  Baron is an advocate and versed in the Old World labor of classic soutirage traditional method of barrel to barrel racking.  Thus, as the Merlot is aged for 18 months in new thin-staved French Oak barrels, it is slowly racked from barrel to barrel.  This process actual serves to delicately decant the wine from one barrel to another without the harsh effects of a pump.  2000 Twomey Merlot is an unfiltered blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc.

"The 2000 Twomey Cellars Merlot is a wine of extraordinary complexity and balance.  It has a dark, ruby color and a complex nose of black cherry jam, dark chocolate (#277-3990) and roasting coffee.  A rich attack is followed by a mouthful of luscious fruit and a lingering, elegant finish.  Given proper cellaring, the full-bodied Merlot will continue to give drinking pleasure to 2015."
Daniel Baron, Winemaker, Twomey Cellars
