Dear Wine Friend,
Sometimes it is
meant to be.....sh-- happens! I was five minutes away
from sending this newsletter with my latest discovery from
Spring Mountain in Napa Valley, when I received a crazed
e-mail from my source - Oh God! It's sold
out! Don't send." The day before I had been told
150 cases were available. Such is the wine
business. I know it was a great wine at a great price,
but enough already!
So how 'bout a really good
drink of "Dago Red" from the Sierra foothills? No
kidding! Isn't everyone just looking for a reasonable
and fair priced, good bottle of drinking wine with
some rustic terroir personality? "Dago Red" doesn't
mean Sangiovese or Barbera, or other Italian varietals....
Hell, those fiesty old Italian lads would drink just
about anything good and red....this happens to be some tasty
Syrah fruit from a 1.2 acre vineyard called Lone Acre up
near Pleasant Valley, east of Placerville in El Dorado
County....near our good friends John LaGrou (Mr. Microphone!)
and John McCready at Sierra Vista.
Lone Acre dormant in
winter.
Ted Ennis pays tribute to his
Mom's Grandpa, Simone Giusto, who first planted grapes in
Cloverdale, Sonoma in 1927.....and operated Dago Sam's Bar in
the Mission District in San Francisco until his death in
1956.... with 100 case productions of Lone Acre "Simone
Giusto" Syrah from both the 2004 and 2005 vintage.
Just about 20 cases remain of
the 04 Syrah. Big billowy nose of spicy black fruit,
follows on the palate with grated black
peppercorn, loamy minerality, and enough tangy acidity
to make it perfect for the summer grill or just good old
quaffing! - How does $12.95 a bottle
sound?
The 05 Syrah would make Papa
Simone proud. Ted has added 5% Viognier and a dab of 2%
Grenache to the mix. The nose is a little restrained at
present, but the wine delivers the same rusticity and
delicious fruit as the 2004 rendition. Perhaps this wine will
become a little more complex than the 04, but remember, it's
for good time drinking and there is no reason to
wait! - $14.95 a
bottle.

Sunday picnic table in Cloverdale,
Sonoma
(2004 & 2005 Lone Acre
Syrah label).
Warning: If you are
looking for ripe, "new world", new oaked wines, with
big soft lush mouthfeel....these wines may be
a frightening adventure for you! However, if
you want some good traditional winemaking, where personality
and terroir have been preserved in the bottle,
then Simone Giusto has
a yesteryear TREAT for you.....and price is the
bonus dividend!
Both wines will be on
the pouring roster for the store's tasting bar this
Saturday, May 3rd. from Noon until
4pm. | |
