Willamette Valley Pinot Noir....
TWC's Tasting Bar this week will feature specially selected Pinot Noir from Oregon's Willamette Valley-
Here is a great opportunity to taste before ordering at presale pricing! From the 2000 and 2001 vintage, one and 2.5 ounce samples will be poured at any time from at least six of the following producers: Rex Hill, Patton Valley, McKinlay, Shea Wine Cellars, Bethel Heights, Domaine Serene, Broadley, Penner-Ash, Chehalem. Remember, 12 wines are always available to sample and the Tasting Bar is ALWAYS OPEN!
Monday.....GAJA TASTING
We had the rare opportunity to sample some of Angelo Gaja's famous wines. There are two people responsible for Italy's wine renaissance the last 25 years; Piero Antinori from Tuscany and Angelo Gaja from Piedmonte. Angelo Gaja's mission was to produce a much higher quality Barbaresco and Barolo from the Nebbiolo grape. Over the years, his success gained him international status and enhanced the reputation for the Piedmonte region as a world class wine producing region. Gaja wines always display intense concentration and balance without being overly tannic. His wines are always very age worthy. Gaja's wines are extremely difficult to obtain and very expensive. Angelo Gaja has never been a man to rest on his laurels. Ever restless, he has built a new winery in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany to produce SuperTuscan and classic Bordeaux blends. Ca' Marcanda premiere release is the 2000 Magari! Magari is an Italian word with several meanings: "if only", "would that it were true", "perhaps". The name Magari reflects the Piedmontese way of not trumpeting one's accomplishments. The irony with Magari, intended to become Ca' Marcanda's standard-bearer, is the wine screams "GAJA IS HERE" in Bolgheri (Tuscany)! "ATTENTION ORNELLAIA! ATTENTION SASSICAIA!"
Gaja's Margari is a masterful Bordeaux blend of 50% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc that billows from the glass with aromatic clouds of spicy, ripe red and black berries. But the wine really knocks you out when you experience its lush, smooth, deep, ripe sexy fruit on your palate! This wine is a no brainer for either the collector or the hedonist! Only 3 six pack cases were immediately available Monday and I snagged them instantly after tasting......more is expected. For a Gaja wine, Margari is a bargain at $75 a bottle. Expect the price to spiral upwards dramatically.
