SOL ROUGE CABERNET
SAUVIGNON
From high elevation RED SOIL
Always
looking for ultra severe
viticulture!

Dear
Friend,
I am always looking for high
elevation, ultra extreme viticulture sites! Where
the vines struggle to find any form of precipitation, drainage
is a sieve, temperatures range in the low-to-high
extremes, and although photosynthesis thrives in the brighter
light, the grapes are smaller and yields are miniscule.
The results of such stressful conditions, if the vines
survive, are intensely flavored, concentrated and structured
wines. No whimps!
I have always been fascinated
by red earth, so Mars (above) would be an ideal
setting!! But alas, not in my life
time.
Here in Northern California,
the secret is now out! At the far northernly reach of
the Mayacamas range, separating Napa from Sonoma, is the Red Hills AVA where a veritable gold
rush for vineyard development has recently taken
place. Yes, there is rich "RED GOLD" in these
rugged mountainous hills of decomposing volcanic
rock. And when you experience the depth of
flavor and firm tannic foundation of these fledgling
wines you know why great excitement is being generated by
them.
I introduced you to the 2004 Obsidian
Ridge from Red Hills. NOW, meet Sol Rouge
("red soil" en Francais), a seventy acre, all
hillside estate of tightly spaced varietals....exposed on
some slopes up to 60 degrees at an elevation of 1800
feet. We let the premiere release of the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Red
Hills rest in a decanter for 3 hours, before
unleashing it on an unsuspecting three inch thick
slab, bone-in, char grilled, then slow roasted Angus
ribeye last Sunday evening. Overpowering? No!
Forceful? Yes, but seductively so....This young wine
knows how to get its own way! More horseradish
please! Aged in French oak for 18 months, and racked but
once, the bold and richly concentrated black fruits are
bolstered by an underpinning of firm tannins. Hints
of black licorice, dark chocolate, soy, cedar, and
dried nicoise olive dart about. An expansive
finish lingers. Oh, it so nice to drink a Cabernet
Sauvignon that helps to define why this grape is
considered
KING!
Sol Rouge is the vested project of
winemaker Bryan Kane and his wife Jill. Bryan's
non-interventionist approach to winemaking is designed to
showcase specific vineyard site terroir. There
is no doubt Brian is on track as his 2005 Sol
Rouge Cabernet Sauvignon, composed from grapes purchased
from Beckstoffer's Napa Valley To Kalon and Dr.
Crane Vineyards, was recently named "Best of Appellation
Award" by Appellation America. Sorry, this wine is
completely sold out.
However, Wine X Magazine just rated the 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon from Red
Hills 95/100 points. Don't delay your order
as only 200 cases were produced....and Bryan and Jill are
not being that generous!! For more
information go to www.pr.com/press-release/88187 .
OH! SURPRISE!! SHOULD BE $32
A BOTTLE.
