Believe it or NOT!?! In the very near future, an electronic tongue will enable you to identify a wine's vintage and varietal....and after a little more tweaking, it should also be able to identify region (aka terroir) and make a qualitative analysis of your wine. Yes, just purchase a hand held electritongue to do all of your wine assessments. You think I am kidding!! Designed for quality control in the "field", the device is made up of six sensors which detect substances characteristic of a certain wine variety. Components such as acid, sugar and alcohol can be measured by this detection, and from these parameters it can determine the age and variety of the wine. The "tongue" was invented by Cecilia Jiménez-Jorquera and colleagues from the Barcelona Institute of Microelectronics, Spain, and is reported in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal The Analyst. I can see it now. The waiter pulls his electritongue meter reader out of his hip holster and administers a few drops. Presto! "Yes Sir!
