BATTLE OF THE MALBECS!
Argentina vs. France

Dear Wine Friend,

Here is a great opportunity to educate your palate by comparison, or simply enjoy two outstanding examples of Malbec from growing regions in different hemispheres of the world.  We have offered successful past vintages of the Argentine Colome Estate, and the French Chateau du Cedre before now, so many of you may already be familar with them.  But you should be alerted to the higher quality level of both these two new releases.

Donald Hess's project, Colome Estate, emanates from pre-phylloxera root stock planted by French immigrants in 1854.  The vineyards are located in Argentina's northwestern province of Salta, and are the highest in the world, situated at elevations ranging from 7,200 to 9,900 feet.  For my tasting notes, background,  and recent Wine Spectator's 92 point review please click here >

Chateau du Cedre is one of the best traditional French producers of exceptionally fine quality Malbec in Cahors.  In France, Malbec vines flourished in Bordeaux, and to the east in the Cahors region, located about 150 miles away in the bucolic Dordogne Valley, until they were wiped out by the phylloxera root louse beginning in the 1860s.  Up until that time, both regions were competitive rivals to one another for fine wine production.  In the early 1900s, Malbec re-emerged as a minor role player for blending along the left banks of the Gironde River running through Bordeaux.  The Malbec vineyards of Cahors were also reestablished, but until recently always produced very black, extremely tannic, rustic wines, that required years of patience for the best results. In all likelihood, the old vines at Colome are direct descendants from the Cahors region.  For more background and tasting notes please click here > www.thewineconsultant.com/wine/1533
