BEWARE!

Dear Wine Friend,

I keep hearing from my brokers and distributors that restaurants are really hurting.  Even my delivery drivers are telling me they have fewer and fewer orders for restaurants. Is there little wonder why wine sales are down in restaurants?  I remember the old days when wine lists seemed expensive if pricing doubled retail. Now, it is not unsual to see wines marked up larcenously three and four fold over retail.....Then restaurant owners complain about all the customers bringing in their own wine.  So UP go the corkage fees!  I was in the restaurant business for twenty years, before I opened The Wine Consultant in 1990, and I still do NOT understand WHAT justifies or warrants the higher mark ups for restauarant wine, beer and liquor sales?  Something about glassware, and hiring someone to open the bottle.....COME ON!!  .

So let me tell you, the battle ground has grown to "wine-by-the-glass".  BEWARE!!  We were at a Spanish restaurant the other evening, one listing many wines that consumers have no price reference, and I could not believe my eyes.   2006 Bodegas Volver Paso a Paso, a very excellent value selection of Tempranillo from the La Mancha region south of Madrid, was on the by-the-glass list for $14!!  You do the math, but I sell the same wine in a 750 ml bottle (about 25 ounces) for $12.95 minus discount for $11.40.  It's getting dangerous out there!!   Dining and entertaining at home seem like the way to go!!

Btw - We like the Paso a Paso very much!  Maybe the restaurant thinks it can get alway with this nonsense, because....well, the wine drinks like a much more expensive bottle.  Full of ripe black and red fruits, mingling with a chorizo, or smoked meat component on the nose.  Palate impressions are very giving and smooth, but an underlying firmness and lengthy finish make me want to test it with a traditional portugese stew or saffron laced paella.
