B-day Wine
August 21, 2003

I consider myself a critic first and then a wine merchant. The August Briggs 2001 Napa Valley Zinfandel is one of the most alluring Zins I have been seduced by in a long time! Below is the winery's profile (www.augustbriggswines.com) for this sexy wine. I celebrated my birthday this week, and of all the wines I could have selected for dinner... this was IT! RenÈe's baby back ribs with her homemade spicy peach glazed BBQ sauce were the perfect accompaniment (not to mention the chipotle cornbread!). The warmer Calistoga region in the north of Napa Valley assures even ripening of these low yield, dry farmed, head pruned "relic" vines. Perfectly balanced to consume in copious quantities now or to cellar at your convenience for 3 to 5 years, this stylish "juice" exemplfies the excitement for the excellent 2001 vintage. It will be available to sample at the tasting bar beginning this Saturday. Or please, order by reply email or telephone! The retail price is $31.50 a bottle. Order an quantity until the end of August for $25.75! Find your priority email # and win two bottles! Just notify me with in 48 hours! Yes, there is a lucky number hidden in this email somewhere! Have you become a priority email member?
August Briggs 2001 Napa Valley Zinfandel
The 2001 August Briggs Napa Valley Zinfandel is our seventh vintage of this wine since starting our company in 1995. This wine is a combination of two vineyards, the first planted in 1904 within the city limits of Calistoga. The second vineyard was planted in 1950 and is located just south of Calistoga on the Silverado Trail. Both vineyards are head trained and non- irrigated, yielding one to two tons per acre depending on the vintage.

Deep ruby in color with aromas of dark berry, spice, tobacco and cedar. This Zinfandel is what I call old style with a ripe core of fruit and a good backbone of tannin allowing a match with the most flavorful meals.

The grapes for this wine were picked at about 26 brix, destemed into a small open-topped fermenter, and punched down by hand. After completion of fermentation the wine was drained, pressed, and inoculated with a malo-lactic culture. Completion of ML was allowed while aging in 50% new Demptos American oak barrels and 50% two and three year old French barrels. Barrel aging lasted 16 months prior to bottling without filtration.
