EXCELLENT NEW VINTAGES FOR TWO "OLD" FAVORITE VALUES FROM CALIFORNIA!

06 OBSIDIAN RIGGE CABERNET SAUVIGNON

05 HAPPY CANYON "PIOCHO"

Dear Wine Friend,

It was the Fall of 2006 when I introduced the Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, and the Happy Canyon Piocho (Meritage blend) as new "discovery" wines to you.  Not that one has anything to do with the other,  but if you have opened either of them recently, you know what an absolute steal of a deal you made!  Lots has changed over the past two years, but rest assured the new releases of each wine continue to deliver a wealth of lusty black and blue fruits, while maintaining a price point to challenge the best value for its type produced in California.

"People's Choice Award" - Each wine has been poured at the last two Saturday Tasting Bar episodes, and both Saturdays their popular acceptance has overwhelmed the "featured" wine.

Saturday "Blind" Tasting -

So, we thought it would be fun for this Saturday's Tasting Bar lineup to include a "Mini-Blind" tasting of the following wines:

06 Ancient Peaks Cabernet Sauvignon, Margarita Ranch, Paso Robles  $15.95 ($14.04)
06 Obsidian Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Hills AVA, Lake County  $27.95 ($24.60)
05 Happy Canyon "Piocho" (Meritage blend), Santa Ynez $29.95 ($26.36)
06 Fattoria di Felsina Chianti Classico (Sangiovese), Tuscano, Italy $21.95 (19.32)
04 Bodegas LAN Reserva Rioja, (Tempranillo), Spain $17.95 ($15.80)
07 Kanonkop "Kadette" (Bordeaux blend/Pinotage), South Africa $13.50 ($11.88)

Of course, this is a friendly and casual walk-in gathering, that can get a little crazy later in the afternoon.  The tasting runs from Noon to 4pm.  There is a $10 fee, but waived with any $20 purchase.

Obsidian Ridge

Named for the volcanic glass littering the red soils of this elevated vineyard (2,650 feet), in the Red Hills AVA that extend along the Mayacamas ridge north of Napa, this wine has huge potential, as witnessed by the evolution of its two previous vintages.

For the first time a touch of Cabernet Franc has been blended to add intensity and complexity to the aromas.  The wine was aged for 18 months in Hungarian oak.  Red and black cherries and currants, with hints of anise, dark leather, dried spice box, and mineral loam are evident in this enticingly rich and densley structured wine.

Last vintage scored 90 points in Wine Spectator.

Piocho

"Piocho" is a Chumash Indian word meaning "where the two rivers meet and go to heaven"!

The 2005 Piocho is a proprietary "Bordeaux" blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, with the balance equal parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  Produced by Happy Canyon Vineyards and Kent Margerum from fruit farmed in the warmer inland reaches of the Happy Canyon Valley, a new sub-appellation in the southeastern corner of Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara county.  Here, Cabernet Franc's spicy "blue" fruit has become king, and arguably the best in the state!
 .

Redolent aromas and lush flavors of perfectly ripened black raspberry, black cherry and blueberry fruit tantalize the palate.  Impressive underlying acidity, and tightly knit tannins adds a freshness and vibrancy that keeps your palate begging for more..  This wne delivers the "WOW' factor, and we heard it repeated many times at the tasting bar!  18 months in new and used Tauransaud French oak barrels.

04 vintage received 92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

This is really a great opportunity to purchase a diverse selection of the best fine wine values from California, and around the world;
