Dear Wine
Friends,
Everyday, we meet with
a steady stream of owners, winemakers, importers,
distributor reps, and brokers to sample their
"wares". Last Friday, in the process of
separating the chaff from the wheat, l
got VERY LUCKY!!....and you can
too! I found a Priorat you MUST
TRY!
WAIT! DON'T STOP
READING!!!
Great old
vine Priorat does not exist under $60 a
bottle. For that reason alone, most Americans have
not "taken a chance" to experience the excitement
found in these densely packed red
wines produced in this arid, remote region
south of Barcelona and inland
from Tarragona. What's so special about this
place? Schist! The hardest of the
shales! Known as "licorella" in
Priorat. The region was rediscovered in the mid
1980s by a handful of modern pioneers.
As luck would have it, just 1,500 scattered
acres of century old Grenache
(Garnacha) and Carignan (Cariñena)
vines were found and nurtured back to health
in this ancient wine producing region. All of them
had been planted on very steep hillside terraces,
and had struggled to survive in layers of pure schist
rock, while existing only on meager rainful (see
photographs below). These extremely low
yielding vines (1 bottle per bush is not unusual)
continue to be dry farmed, and stretch their roots
in search of moisture. To be
considered a great Priorat
wine, the distinctively mineral
"licorella" component must be present. Renee
likes to describe the aroma as similar to the
mimeograph blue "ditto" ink used to print our grade
school papers (dating ourselves here!).
2005 Vinos de Terruños "Mas Negre" is the BEST
VALUE in traditional Priorat I have found ....
EVER! From the small commune of El Molar
(pop. 280), this blend of 60% Cariñena and 40%
Garnacha HAS IT ALL! Saturated purple
color! Classic "licorella"
minerality integrated with intense black and blue
cobbler fruits! "Mas Negre" is rich and
dense, yet fresh and still light on its
feet. Judging by this wine's lengthy finish,
I have no doubts it will dazzle you
over the next ten years.
LUCKY PART!! Even at the
retail price of $30 a bottle, the 2005 Vinos de
Terruños "Mas Negre" is the real
BARGAIN!! BUT, I HAVE 20 CASES I CAN SELL AT
$22.50 A BOTTLE!! ORDER SIX BOTTLES AND I WILL MAKE
IT $19.95 A
BOTTLE!!!
