Decompression Time!
May 06, 2004

Hola! There is much to tell you about our wonderful trip to Spain, but for nowit's rehab anddecompression time.
The Wine Consultant's new website is preparing to launch later in the month. I will continue to email my weekly newsletters to you, but you will also be able toaccess these updates directly fromthe website. A powerful search tool willenable you tofind and referencetasting notesfroman archive of past newsletters. Additionally, The Wine Consultant'scomplete inventory will bemaintained daily and available for your perusal. The "virtual" tasting barfeaturewillprovide you with an up-to-the-minute roster of what isbeing poured at the store'stasting bar. The shopping cart feature has been removed as I want to encourage customer interactionwhen you place an order by telephone or email. Overall, I believe the site will provide you with auser friendly resource that will help you make intelligent and informed wine purchases. Easy to remember, please bookmark www.thewineconsultant.com

I was able to purchase a final ten cases of the 2001 Frank Family Chardonnay before it took the price increase I predicted. If you would like to reload on this "liquid crÈme brulee",please order atmy original priceof $21.75 per bottle. The winery'sprice is $28.75.

I also received another "final"24 bottles of the 2001 Caymus Special Select Cabernet Sauvignon thatscored 95 points in the Wine Spectator. If you missed outor would like to add a littlespecial occasion hedonism to your stashthis wine is now priced at $139.95 a bottle.

> Finally, do you remember the 2001 August Briggs Zinfandel that I selected last summer for my birthday bbq rib dinner? If you were one of the lucky ones to latch on to bottles of this recommendation, hopefully you have now tried a bottle or so and sharemy enthusiasm. This is a copy of my email last August.
I consider myself a critic first and then a wine merchant. The August Briggs 2001 Napa Valley Zinfandel is one of themost alluringZins I have been seduced by in along time! Icelebrated my birthday this week, and of all the wines I could have selected for dinner... this was IT!RenÈe'sbaby back ribswith her homemade spicy peach glazedBBQsauce were the perfect accompaniment (not to mention the chipotle cornbread!).The warmer Calistogaregion in the north of Napa Valley assures even ripening of these low yield, dry farmed, head pruned "relic" vines. Perfectly balanced to consume in copious quantities now or to cellar at your convenience for 3 to 5 years, this stylish"juice"exemplifies the excitement for the excellent 2001 vintage.
Guess what? Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine certainly agreed with me. In its annual 2004 JanuaryZin ZAP issue (always passed out for freeat the SF ZAP event) CGCWscored the 2001 August Briggs Zinfandel 95 pointsto make it thetop ratedZinfandel ofall those reviewed.

2001 AUGUST BRIGGS
Zinfandel Napa Valley

Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine
Volume 28 Issue 3: January 2004
95 THREE STARS:(95-98 points) An exceptional wine. Wortha special search of the market.
This perennially high-achieving Zinfandel hits the mark smartly again with this lovely, deeply fruited effort. Its broad sweep of lavish oak adds layers of richness without ever diminishing the wine's altogether compelling impressions of perfectly ripened blackberries. Slightly supple in feel and moderately full in body, it is remarkably well-balanced given its concentration and sheer sense of fruity scale, and it has all the hallmarks of a Zin that should age well. It reaffirms our opinion that August Briggs is one of the best with the varietal. Very limited availability.Medium Red. Balanced, good depth, medium tannin. Beef and lamb.Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine. $32.00
According to the winery's representative, only nine cases of the 2002 August Briggs Zinfandelare allocated for the East Bay/Sacramento Valley. However, to reward TWC for my support of the 2001 Zin, the winery has decided thatit will allow me to place a one time orderfor whatever amount I desire later in the month. Ah! The benefits of being a TWC email recipient!! Ihave tasted this 2002Zin twice.......Once in early March just after bottling when the wine was underwhelming and obviously bottle shocked......And then againyesterday, when I was relieved that the wine hadaccomplished a complete reversal and the wine was very reminiscent of the brilliant 2001.Without hesitation, I can endorse the 2002vintage as another greatsuccess!451-5284
The 2002 August Briggs Napa Valley Zinfandel isthe eighth vintage of this wine sincethe inception of the winery in 1995. The wine is a combination of two old vine vineyards, the first being planted in 1904 within the city limits of Calistoga. The second vineyard being the Frediani Vineyard which was planted in 1950 and is located just a quarter mile south of the winery on the Silverado Trail. Both vineyard are head trained and non-irrigated, thus yielding one to two tons per acre depending on the vintage. Deep ruby in color with aromas of blackberry, spice, tobacco and cedar. This is an old style Zinfandel with a ripe core of fruit and a good backbone of tannin, thus matching well with a diversity of cuisines......especially bbq ribs! The grapes for this wine were picked at about 26 brix, destemed into a small open-topped fermenter, and punched down by hand. After completion of fermentation the wine was drained, pressed, and inoculated with a malo-lactic culture. Completion of ML was allowed while aging in 35% Demptos American oak barrels and 65% two and three year old French barrels. Barrel aging lasted 15 month prior to bottling without filtration. 758 cases produced.
The winery's price is $31.95 per bottle. ORDER NOWby reply email or telephone to purchase at mydiscounted price of $28.50 per bottle. All orders will be confirmed by reply emailwith your invoice # and amount. The 2002 August Briggs Zinfandel will be ready to pick up the last week of May.

Thank you!
