Dear Wine Friend,
The new banter in Argentina is
Decero! Finca Decero ("from scratch" in
Spanish) makes only single vineyard wines in the
highly regarded Agrelo region of
Mendoza. The estate's Remolinos Vineyard is situated at
3,500 feet in the foothills sloping to the Andes, and
takes its name from the little "whirlwinds" that
thread their way through the vines.
Really!! We witnessed
these tiny tornadoes on frequent occasions
when we visited the region in January of 2007.
The dancing spirals are particularly common just
before harvest, and help to keep the vines cool and
dry.
From the excellent 2006 vintage, comes the
premiere release of Finca Decero's flagship
proprietary wine "Amano", a referenced to
the "hands on", or individual attention given to each
vine grown in the Remolinos Vineyard. "Amano" is a judiciously
selected blend of 60% Malbec, 35%
Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot from
the best vineyard lots in the Remolinos Vineyard.
These lots have lower natural yields, and are also
thinned to 1 cluster per shoot. Maceration is slightly
longer, and fermentation times and temperatures depend
on the characteristics of the specific lots. The
wine is then gently basket pressed before going into
new French oak barrels for 22
months, followed by 10 months maturation in
bottle. Napa Valley's Paul
Hobbs is the consulting
winemaker. Just 371 cases produced.
I opened a sample bottle at the
tasting bar last Saturday. Btw - the attractive
heavy glass packaging could be a lethal
weapon. Everything and more sold out
immediately. Little wonder! The "Amano" is
a basket of lush, plump ripe red,
blue, black berries. It
possesses gentle nuances
of vanillin, lightly toasted wood
spices, and a very obvious mocha-toffee like
fudge brownie component that leaves everyone
twisting and shouting for more. Those of you who
liked the Zuccardi Zeta, and Riglos Gran Corte,
should give at least a few of these lusty
bottles a
whirl!

REVIEWS!
"The 2006 Amano Remolinos
Vineyard is a modern blend of 60% Malbec, 35% Cabernet
Sauvignon, and 5% Petit Verdot barrel-fermented and
aged for 22 months in new French oak. A saturated
purple in color, it reveals a sexy aromatic array of
pain grille, crushed stone, Asian spices, black
cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Round, rich, and
complex on the palate, it has superior depth and
concentration, well-concealed structure, with
chocolate covered cherries making a cameo in the
lengthy finish. What an impressive debut for Finca
Decero!" - 94 points,

"A ripe, lush style, with
lots of blueberry, fig and plum notes all layered with
alluring mocha and spice. The long, fleshy finish
isn't overwhelming, despite its concentration. Malbec,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot."
