OUTSTANDING WARRANT IN STELLENBOSCH!

Dear Lawbiding Wine Friend,

A nice little memento from our trip to South Africa!  We just learned we have an outstanding warrant in the township of Stellenbosch for a speeding violation that occurred on the afternoon of January 8th. The above photographic evidence was captured when our little white Honda from Avis triggered radar doing a brisk 75 kmph in a 60 kmph zone.   Renee and I were returning from a scrumptuos luncheon appointment at Ken Forrester's 96 Winery Road Restaurant.  Okay, let's take a poll!  Who was driving??!

"Big Brother" in the future!  Highly sensitive aroma sensors will be hidden along the roadsides to detect the presence of illegal drugs, or evidence of alcohol consumption in moving vehicles.

Speaking of aroma therapy!  Stay off the Zicam!!  As reported by the Associated Press in the LA Times last Wednesday, June 17th., "Consumers should immediately stop taking zinc-based intranasal Zicam cold products and discard them or return them to stores because they damage the sense of smell, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday"  Makes me concerned if Zicam has been a staple in the medicine cabinets of some of our most highly regarded wine critics!!  Click on this link to read the complete article! .

HOT WINE TIP OF THE WEEK!
07 Tenuta Argentiera Poggio Ai Ginepri Bolgheri DOC, Tuscano

Bolgheri [bohl-GEH-ree], is located south of Livorno, just inside the coast of Tuscany.  The region is home to the great superTuscans, or "rule breakers", who 40 years ago were avant-garde to challenge the traditional controls and regulations established by the governing DOCG/DOC.   Just to name a few: Sassacaia, Ornellaia, Solaia, Guado al Tasso, and Tignanello are highly collectible, and very expensive world class wines.  But not every wine produced in Bolgheri need be expensive.   And thanks to a customer's passion for fine Italian wine, I have discovered one of these delicious exceptions for you!

Poggio ai Ginepri means "little hill of junipers", referencing the juniper bushes that dot the Argentiera property.  Argentiera's young vineyards, located only 2 km from the sea, are situated in sandy-clay soils at Bolgheri's highest elevation point (150-200 meters above sea level), and benefit from breezes providing constant ventilation in the vineyard. After harvest, carefully selected Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (25%), and Syrah (25%) are vinified separately, but then blended to compose Poggio ai Ginepri.  50% of the wine ages in 2-3 year old French and Hungarian oak barrels for 10 months, and 50% in stainless steel tanks.  High density planting and low yields create a wine of great fruit concentration and intensity.

Yes!  Beautifully scented black and red fruits, with gently spiced oak, and herb blossom floral notes are intriguingly still "Tuscan"....with nary a drop of Sangiovese.  Full and lush on the palate, with a firm sense of structure and balance, and only 13.5% alcohol.  This wine is proof positive that the 2007 vintage will be an excellent vintage in Tuscany.

I want this wine with a thick cut prime ribeye steak that's been drizzled with balsamic and fresh pressed olive oil, then dry marinaded overnight by encrusting in rosemary needles, and crushed black peppercorn.  Grilled slightly char on a scorching hot grill, and then cruised on lower heat.  Garnish with with thinly shaved strips of Parmigiano-Reggiano, gorgonzola cream, or mascarpone horseradish.  Serve with a side of fresh arugula.  Take a double dose of cholestrol medicine!

The 06 Poggio ai Ginepri received 90 points, and the superb 05 vintage received 91 points from the Wine Spectator.  The 2007 vintage has not been reviewed yet, but honestly, I could not rate it any less.
