Bodega Colomé Estate Malbec

Dear Wine Friend,

The 2007 Colome Estate Malbec from Salta, in northwestern Argentina has just been released, and will be available to sample at the Tasting Bar this Saturday from Noon to 4pm.  For the uninitiated, this flamboyant wine is produced from the highest elevated vineyards in the world (7200 to 9800 feet above sea level).  An intriguing component of this wine is the inclusion of fruit from pre-phylloxera plantings of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon by French immigrants dating back to 1854. A Donald Hess project, I have stocked Colome since the its inception releases of the 2003 Reserve and 2004 Estate vintage.  From biodynamically farmed vineyards, the wines have consistently maintain a very saturated dark ruby color, and amazingly high levels of black, blue and red fruit intensity.  Full bodied, Colome's wines are riveted by firm, youthful tannins that mesmerize your palate....and trigger fantasies of sizzling, charred hunks of juicy, grass fed beef being roasted over open campfire!

2007 Estate Malbec

"Quite ripe, with nearly exotic plum sauce, braised fig and crushed blueberry notes rolled together, while spice, mocha and incense hints help stretch out the juicy, dense finish. A flashy style, but well-balanced. Drink now through 2012." - 92 points, Wine Spectator (08/09)

Should be $29.95 a bottle!

07 Andeluna Chardonnay, Tupungato - $10.95
Aged in French oak for seven months.  Vanilla, and lightly buttered toast highlights flavorful pineapple and pear fruit.  High elevation source provides nice citrus acid to balance. Only 688 cases produced.

07 Nieto Senetiner Malbec Reserva, Lujan de Cuyo - $10.95
From 40 year old plus, high elevation vines, this Reserva is aged for 12 months in French oak.  It offers enticing blackberry aromas with an underlying minerality.  Power driven black and blue fruits are full and firm on the palate making you believe this is a far more expensive effort.  Nice, little gritty tannin on the finish is an unexpected pleasant surprise.
