COHO

 HO! HO! HO!

Dear Wine Friend,

So many of you contacted me early last summer when the 06 COHO (who?) Headwaters from Napa Valley scored 95 points in the Wine Spectator.  How often does a Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Napa Valley make this kind of impression, but sells for only $40 a bottle?  Maybe 20 years ago!

COHO might seem like a curious name for a winery brand, but as co-partner Gary Lipp explained it to me yesterday, the salmon's steadfast will to keep going no matter how difficult the journey, to complete the cycle, has many parallels to viticulture and winemaking.  Lipp, and partner Brooks Painter have a combined near fifty years working for California wineries....and still do.  But for their COHO projects they mostly source and contract with growers in the lesser known Coombsville region of Napa Valley, just east of the city of Napa, where the north San Pablo Bay provides cooling breezes and fog, but the hills warm up to fully ripen the Bordeaux varietals.

Coombsville AVA

Like the great 06, the stunning 07 COHO Headwaters is a similar blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot.  I was struck by the finely tuned, exuberant core of black cherry fruit aromas.  Likewise, one is easily capitivated by the vivid intensity of perfectly ripened black cherry-cassis flavors leading to lasting palate impressions and already some complexity. This young wine has a sense of symmetry & balance, but then I love the firm, gritty "little" tannins that vie for your attention in the long, lingering finish.  A pure and delightful drink now, but one of those wines that beckons you to delay instant gratification for what's to come.  This wine will sell out quickly.  1,600 cases produced.

Still $39.95 a bottle!

Order 3 bottles - $36.95, OR 6+ $34.95

06 COHO Merlot - Michael Black Vineyard

Michael Black Vineyard was once a prized source for many a Paul Hobb's Merlot, but now this Coombsville fruit produces a profound "Cabernet drinkers" Merlot for COHO.  Currently, this is the only American Merlot stocked at The Wine Consultant!  YES!  I like it that much!

Should be $55 to $65 a bottle.

NOW $47.95

"Richly structured yet dense and complex. Offers appealing aromas of red currant, thyme and pencil lead, with layered black cherry and toasty mocha-oak flavors that deftly balance bold fruit and firm tannins. Drink now through 2015. 315 cases made. " - 93 points, Wine Spectator (Nov 15, 2009)

TASTING BAR!

At the Saturday's Tasting Bar from Noon to 4pm, I will be pouring two new discovery value wines that are perfect for holiday entertaining!  Both are from the new California producer Lander-Jenkins; an 08 Monterey Chardonnay and a 07 Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon discounting to just $10.75!  Handsomely packaged, these delicious wines are a no-brainer!

Up the scale, I will also be pouring the always popular Burgundian styled 08 Solitude Chardonnay from Carneros, and the rich Graves-like 08 Vogelzang Sauvignon Blanc from Santa Ynez (WS 94 points).

So many of you jumped on the Rusina Monte Rosso Syrah, now comes a deal on the 06 Rusina Petite Sirah from Alexander Valley!  Big, broad shouldered, but not "overdone", it was wonderful with Renee's new recipe posting for "Grown Up Sloppy Joe's". I purchased the last 21 cases.  Rusina's price is $30 at its website, now only $20.95 a bottle at TWC.

One other enticement for you will be the opportunity to sample the 06 I Greppi "Greppicante", another outstanding value SuperTuscan from the typically expensive Bolgheri region of Tuscany.   The 07 just received #46 in the Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of the Year (92 points), but is not due to arrive until next Spring.  The 06 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc  received 91 points, and is should be priced at $28 a bottle, but is simply a STEAL at $20.95!
