A Meritage blend of Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon & Cabernet Franc!
|
|
The Bozzano
boys discovered the soil's
magic on their Italian immigrant
parent's farm while growing up in small
town Linden, east of Stockton in the central valley
of California. Hard work and toiling the land to
annually harvest everything from cucumbers and
asparagus, to cherries and walnuts, provided life
long values and revelations to the young men. An
appreciation for viticulture and fine wine came
later, along with Lino's and Anthony's
insatiable drive to locate and forage
throughout California for the finest cool clime
Bordeaux varietals for their winemaking
prowess. Places where the ripening
process can be risky and prolonged, but
among the rewards are greater flavor intensity, varietal
character, and the integrity of the grape's natural
acidity. Why? Because with a "hands off"
winemaking approach, the distinction of place, or
terroir, is more fully expressed, and
can be understood as a compatible and vivid
blending component for the complete wine. What
a revelation!
The Bozzano
brothers' "nano" Folkway Wine
Company has produced a scant 223 cases of
a Meritage blend from the 2007 vintage that
has created quite a stir at The Wine
Consultant. I had not intended to write about
the "Revelator", but so many customers have
been rejoicing as they restock this flavor
packed value, and afterall, it really does take some
gumption and confidence to designate your wine as
the "Revelator" .... You just
know it has to be special!
Stay with me now, as
this is a little painful, but important to
follow! The 2007 Folkway "Revelator" is
composed of Cabernet Sauvignon (26%) and
Cabernet Franc (6%) from the Black Ridge Vineyard
in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This 32%
component is aged in 100% new oak, 50% each French
and American, for 22 months. The remaining 68% of
the grapes for the Revelator are Merlot, sourced
from a special 2 acre parcel planted in
1996 within the Bien Nacido Vineyards in Santa
Barbara county, and also aged for 22 months in 80% new
heavy-toast French oak and 20% neutral French oak.
The wines are racked from barrel just once before
final blending. That's a lot of new oak!!
When I recently
emailed Anthony about the extended use of new
oak for the "Revelator", and how it conflicted with the
brothers' non-interventionist approach to winemaking, he
responded - "The Revelator is a rather "large"
wine, but unlike it's peers from warmer-climate growing
areas, it also has great acidity. The values of
using oak have as much to do with the affect on
mouthfeel as they do on phenolics, and we have found
that with Bordeaux variety grapes from cooler, hillside
climates, it is necessary to utilize a generous
proportion of new oak in order to make the wine more
accessible and enjoyable. While the amount of new
oak that we use is not decided until we have an
understanding of what the vintage will give us, we are
confident that these wines can stand up to a heavy oak
protocol, complimenting phenolics, as opposed to
compromising
them."
TASTING
NOTES!
Upon opening, this wine has a
growing fan club for its attractive dark brown
sugar, chocolate, mocha, purple plum
nose! On the palate the Revelator is rich and
full bodied, exhibiting a solid core of dark
plum, berries, chocolate ganache, ripe
fig and a tweak of citrus peel.
Welcoming acidity is there to balance the attack, along
with a youthful tannic grip. If you like
this full blown style of wine, then drink
it over the next few hours with the likes
of some gnarly bbq beef ribs, grilled venison,
or simply by itself.
BUT WAIT!!
The REAL revelation for some of
you will be what happens to the Revelator as
it moves past its first dimension with another 12
to 18 hours of breathing time. The
true varietal characteristics we were
promised from the starting lineup of Merlot,
Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc begin to emerge
like magic, as if the wine was jettisoned into the
future by five years. Black and red cherry,
kirsch, black olive, fresh thyme, green
peppercorns, and even a little cedar and graphite seem
to joust for position. The wine remains
mouthfilling and fresh, but has gained
far greater complexity. It should drink will
for at least another 5 to 6 years, but maybe much
longer. 14.5% alcohol.
The Bozzano boys not only talk the talk, but maybe
they are the real
revelators!
