2000 Dunn Vineyard -
Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley - $54.95 NET
Recently I cautioned a couple of
"youthful" senior citizens not to purchase the 1999 Dunn Howell
Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon! Dunn's Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
has a cellaring history that suggests some of his best past vintages
will cellar successfully for at least 25+ years. I diplomatically described the Howell
Mountain as a "young collector's" wine. In other words, if you are
purchasing wine with your social security check, be careful not
to invest in a wine that requires long term cellaring for maturity! It
just might out live you!! May be this is the reason Randy Dunn
continues to produce an earlier maturing and slightly less concentrated
version in his Napa Valley
Cabernet Sauvignon. But, don't think for a moment this is a wimp or
inferior wine to the Howell Mountain. In fact, Randy blends a fair
percentage of Howell Mountain fruit to bolster his valley floor source
to produce this wine.
Cassis, spice,
espresso and black earth dominate the nose. Big, rich dark ripe
crushed berries on the palate with undertones of chocolate and a note
of mint on the palate....and the long Dunn finish! - my notes
And don't let the price fool you either! Randy
is one of the original and most successful cult producers of Napa
Valley, but he has not let it go to his head....or your pocket book!
I remember when he was still the wine maker at Caymus and released
his outstanding 1982 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon for $10 a
bottle. The rest is California wine history!
