READY TO SAVE US
FROM THE IMPENDING DOOM OF "BORING" WINES IN SMALLVILLE!
For the last two months I have focused on foraging for
the best Syrah available on the West Coast.
Unfortunately,
the very best expressions of Syrah are usually produced in the most
miniscule of quantities!
With a
"minimalist" winemaking approach, low yielding Syrah can "fingerprint"
the uniqueness and essence its vineyard terroir. In
the month of November you will have the opportunity to purchase from a
limited series
of great Syrah
offerings, and experience the very different personalities, aromatics
and structure offered by this super grape.
Let me introduce
you to Pax Wine Cellars of
Sonoma. Pax Mahle was the former wine buyer at Dean and Deluca in St.
Helena. Pax specializes in limited production vineyard-designated
Syrahs from unique hillside and mountain vineyards from the northern
coast of California. Nonintervention winemaking, natural yeast
fermentation, French oak aging (40-50%), and no fining or filtration
has resulted in a portfolio of blockbuster Syrahs. Robert Parker
bestowed all middle 90 point scores on Pax's
Syrahs from the 2001 vintage. Regretfully,
these wines are completely sold out! However, rest assured the 2002
vintage is a very worthy and serious predecessor.
2002 Pax Syrah, Obsidian,
Knights Valley - Pax found this southern sloping vineyard
on a 1200' mountaintop
above Franz
Valley on the western edge of the Knights Valley Appellation. It
overlooks some of Sonoma's most prestigious Chardonnay vineyards. The
surface of the vineyard is covered entirely in rock and there is very
little top soil. One beautiful distinction of this site is the
baseball sized chunks of Obsidian glass that sparkle amongst the rocks,
evidence of the well documented volcanic activity which occurred here
two million years ago. The purity of fruit is evidence of the twenty
five years these vines have struggled to gain a foothold in this rocky
vineyard set on a decomposing sandstone base. The wine from this
vineyard shimmers as black as Obsidian. Aromas of blackberry liqueur,
black truffle, licorice and spice make you swoon! And a full palate
impression of pure black fruit essence unfolds in a steady wave to the
finish line....that seems to keep moving farther away. This wine is a
pure marvel and a joy to drink. Only 207 cases were produced! ($43.95
a bottle)
2002
Pax Syrah, Lauterbach Hill, Russian River Valley - Lauterbach Hill is a northfacing hillside vineyard
planted on gravelly/sandy soil by the well known Lee Martinelli
(Jackass Hill Vineyard fame). The vines grow very vigorously here
and Pax has learned to severely drop at least half of the Syrah
clusters on to the ground to assert control and assure the potential
concentration and structure of the resulting wine. Aromas of Chambord
are penetrating like a large balled fist being thrust
upward! Full bodied is an understatement for this enormous wine that
still manages to achieve balance with the ripe pure black fruit as it
tight ropes across the palate....tannins hinted at every teeter, but
never falling. A thrilling wine to unleash on a cold winter night in
front of a roaring fire!
Only 275 cases were produced! ($49.95 a bottle)
The Pax Syrahs are sold only
together as a two bottle set for $93.90! Limits maybe imposed! - But wait...there is an OPTION BONUS!!.....The 2001 LEWIS SYRAH from Napa Valley!!
For every
Pax Syrah set purchased you have the OPTION to purchase ONE bottle of the just released
2001 LEWIS SYRAH from Napa Valley for $57.95.
Total price for all three bottles is $151.85 (excluding
applicable sales tax or shipping if required).
Every Syrah fan
has been anticipating the release of the 2001 Lewis Syrah. It would be
difficult to argue a
better Syrah is
produced in Napa Valley. Last vintage we were spoiled with an abundant
800 case production
of the Lewis
Syrah. TWC received 11 cases. However, I regret to inform you
that only 150 cases were
produced of the
decadent and lavishly styled 2001 Lewis Syrah. Dennis Bell of Lewis
Cellars explained to
us via e-mail - "As everyone knows, tonnage was at record high levels in 2000
and production was significantly lower from 2001. We made 800 cases of
2000 Syrah and only 150 from 2001. We made so little because
(367-1756) we wanted it to be the best wine possible and to retain our
position as a top Napa Syrah producer. The barrels that didn't make
the 2001 Syrah went into the Syrah in Alec's Blend and a little into
Ethan's Syrah."
I feel very fortunate to receive this wine! To be fair I am
only offering this wine to my e-mail customers and on a first come
basis. Don't be disappointed! All three wines offered in this
promotion are uncompromising and of excellent quality. The 2001 Lewis Syrah will not be sold
separately.
