THREE
GREAT CABS FROM NAPA VALLEY!
2000 LEWIS
RESERVE - NAPA VALLEY
- Greatly
anticipated! Finally, everyone knows that Randy Lewis only makes
excellent wines!!
If you missed out on the 2000
release last Fall, here is a chance to remove the "kick me" sign from
your back. Only 2,300 cases produced.
"For us 2000 was a terrific vintage,
providing plenty of hang time and full ripening through late October.
Our 2000 Reserve Cabernet is dense and powerful, yet supple with a
rich, round palate. The wine is spilling-over with spicy oak and
aromatic cedar, centered on rich black fruit. A cloak of clove,
vanillin and seductive oak spice wraps around a deeply fruited core of
currant and wild berries with hints of anise and chocolate that
gradually give way to long, mouth-coating tannins."

PARADIGM - NAPA VALLEY
-
In a short period of time Winemaker Heidi
Peterson Barrett has become legendary. Her portfolio includes
paramount wines from Screaming Eagle and Dalla Valle to name a few.
Paradigm is a valley floor Oakville production that exemplifies Heidi's
trademark style of balance - wines that combine elegance and finesse
with power and strength. The 1999 Paradigm Cabernet Sauvignon
is touched with 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. The winery has
enacted a "later release" program effective with this wine. The
Cabernet Sauvignon will age a minimum of 20 month in barrique and
another 20 months in bottle before it leaves the winery.
"The 99 Cabernet Sauvignon is very
deep black ruby in color. The aromas are of appealing ripe red
cherries and plums with plenty of complementary sweet, toasty
vanilla-like French oak. This is a big flavor wine without big
tannins. The mouthfeel is soft and round yet has a burst of cherry and
plum sweet flavors. The structure here is firm and my guess is this
powerful, flavorful wine will also be a good wine to age. The initial
entry palate is soft, but the flavors and intensity of the wine builds
across the mid-palate ending with a long finish. Very good balance and
a very nice wine from the blockbuster 1999 vintage" - Heidi Peterson
Barrett.

ROSENBLUM RESERVE - YATES RANCH, MT VEEDER, NAPA VALLEY
- I had my eye on this wine in late December,
but could not order it since the store was going to be closed for
remodeling. I was shocked to find it still available in February,
especially since only about 600 cases were produced. Of course,
Rosenblum is know for its great fruit driven Zins and maybe this is why
the wine has been "overlooked". Usually, mountain grown Cabernet
Sauvignon has more obvious tannic structure and cellaring is
required to resolve the astringency. However, this wine proves
contrary to theory as its immediate approachability beckons for your
attention! If you like sweet vanillin scents and gobs of
chocolaty-black cherry fruit on the palate, and a soft plush mouthfeel,
then this is your wine!! In recent issues Connoisseur's Guide has
given it 91 points and California Grapevine 90 points.
