Dear Wine Friends,
2008 Lagier-Meredith Syrah Mt. Veeder-Napa Valley
Should be $53.95 a bottle - NOW $44.95 NET
One of the truly great micro-artisan wines of Napa Valley is Lagier-Meredith Syrah from Mount Veeder. Steve Lagier is a former Mondavi veteran winemaker, and Carole Meredith is a UC Davis Professor of Viticulture & Enology (Emeritus) who is world reknown for her DNA research. The married couple prepared and planted their 4 acre mountain vineyard over a ten year period. Their wine expresses its terroir quite differently every vintage. This true vineyard-to-bottle wine is aged in only neutral ("used") François Frères barrels to help preserve the subtle nuances and spice that cool clime Syrah offers. In the Hermitage tradition, a token 1% of Viognier is co-fermented in the must.
This Syrah is captivating and collectible, capable of long-term cellaring while also providing instant gratification for those that enjoy young wines. Indeed, this is one of the great wines of the Napa Valley! I have personally collected the Lagier-Meredith Syrah for every vintage back to 2000. Only 560 cases of the 08 Syrah were produced. Routinely rated in the mid-90's, the 2008 offering has received the following praise from Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate:
"Consistently one of the great Syrahs made in California is Carol Meredith's offering from Mt. Veeder. Lagier Meredith's stunning 2008 Syrah reveals an opaque ruby/purple hue along with a gloriously intense perfume of roasted meats, herbs, barbecue smoke, burning embers, plums and acacia flowers. The wine possesses exceptional intensity, a full-bodied opulence and not a hard edge to be found. It is a beautifully complex, ethereal Syrah to drink over the next 7-10 years"
95 Points- Robert Parker, Wine Advocate
