Although this is Ferrer-Bobet's secondary wine, the success of the initial 2005 release has put Ferrer Bobet on the wine world map for those who are paying attention. In fact, two of Spain's most important wine publications named the 05 Ferrer Bobet "Wine of the Year" for 2008 and 2009!!
Sibaritas - "2009 Wine of the Year". "Above all, the freshness seduced the judges of Sibaritas, which set it apart from the majority of reds from Priorat, which are excessively ripe and made to be big wines. On the contrary, the Ferrer Bobet 2005 balanced ripeness with freshness, nobility with succulence, and passion with elegance. Not bad for a debut..."
El Mundo - "2008 Wine of the Year". "The top wine among all the new wines we tasted this year."
Steven Spurrier - 2005 Ferrer Bobet "Best Old-World Red" Decanter Magazine - May 28th, 2010.
"From one of Priorat's coolest and steepest vineyards, the 53% Carignan and 35% Grenache are more than 100 years old (Syrah and Cabernet complete the mix). Fine, earthy nose with wild berry fruits, warm and rich with integrated oak. Complex."

Ferrer-Bobet is the future showplace of Priorat. No expense has been spared in the construction of a magnificent winery (reminds me of a flying saucer-like spaceship) and in the planting of the vineyards. Sergi Ferrer-Salat is a young pharmaceutical tycoon with apparently a much greater interest in fine wine than drugs, while his partner Raul Bobet was the long-time winemaker at Torres. Ferrer-Salat makes it clear that his goal is to make the greatest wine possible without regard to whether he makes money. As for the wines, they are currently made from purchased fruit as the Ferrer-Bobet vineyards are still very young. However, money talks and the winery has been able to access great old-vine Carignan and Grenache fruit, enough so that they might have some difficulty surpassing what they have already achieved when their vineyard matures.
The 05 Ferrer Bobet is composed from 100-year-old Carinena (53%) and Garnacha (35%) vines sourced from steep hillside terraced vineyards between the region's capitol township of Falset and the cool clime village of Porrera; the balance being Syrah (7%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). The wine displays a magnificent nose of wet slate/mineral, dark ripe "strawberry-black cherry", mingled with hints of warm Moroccan-like spice. Full and expansive on the palate with excellent definition, focus and clarity of flavors. Fermented in 15-30 hecto-liter used oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Then aged 12 months in new and used French barrique. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Could cellar another 5 to 8+ years. - I have purchased the remaining inventory of 18 cases...... The wine should be priced at $50 ($396 a case wholesale), but I am able to pass this negotiated "close out" savings to you at $34.95 a bottle..... which is simply an outrageous bargain for a wine of this style and breed.

Finally, I want to remind you this wine is Ferrer-Bobet's premiere release. I am working to obtain new vintage releases of the Ferrer Bobet, and their Seleccio Especial as they have all acheived ratings from 92 to 98 points by the Wine Advocate. The 2005 vintage for Priorat was very good, but curiously, the 05 Ferrer Bobet was never reviewed by Parker or his crew?!?! If so, I doubt this amazing value would have ever availed itself!!
