Paloma? or Uriah and Frederick
December 04, 2003

If you have not already heard, Paloma's 2001 Merlot - Spring Mountain District just received the Wine Spectator's #1 pick for the 2003 Top 100 Wines of the Year. California was overdue and once the wine was scored 95 points by senior editor James Laube, it was easy to speculate Paloma was a leading candidate for the honor. 2500 cases were produced and the wine originally retailed at $45 a bottle. Now that Paloma has been anointed the new crown, "everyone" is stumbling over each other to obtain a precious bottle or two and the price has increased to $100+ a bottle****. Let's remember, one of the four criteria the WS used to make its selection was "value"....so I guess unless you purchased earlier, that aspect about the wine has been negated. This email will hopefully serve to reestablish your focus with another option and put things in a slightly different perspective.
Do you remember SPRING VALLEY "URIAH" from Walla Walla Valley in Washington state? Last year I called it the next Leonetti! The 2000 vintage scored 94 points by the WS (#17 - 2002 TOP 100). Guess what? The 2001 version of this Merlot based proprietary wine was AGAIN afforded 94 points by the WS and just positioned the #13 spot in the WS 2003 TOP 100. Oh! Price? $39.95......a little more difficult to obtain as only 900 cases were produced! Can I help you forget a little about the Paloma?
Now, for the first time, Spring Valley has just released the 2001 "FREDRICK" - Only 500 cases of this Cabernet based proprietary wine were produced.....Spring Valley names its wines in tribute to pioneering family members who endured the struggles of agriculture on the old farmstead. Frederick is Uriah's son, and Shari's father. Shari Corkum and her husband Dean Derby run the family wine business.....and so we are now acquainted with the family! More about the wines.......
2001 Frederick is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Aged 20 months in 50% new and 50% one vintage old barrels-- 80% French oak. Classic "Left Bank" Bordeaux paradigm. Intense cassis, chocolate, and berries and more berries.... with structure and pioneering stamina....long finish ....built for cellaring! Oh! Price? $47.95......
2001 Uriah is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Aged 17 months in 80% new and 20% one vintage old barrels-- 75% French oak. Intense raspberry and cherry fruit with a spicy floral and fresh herb note....sprig of vanillin...lingering flavors.....very accessible now, but will improve with moderate cellaring.
I am selling the 2001 Uriah and Frederick as a SET ONLY (one bottle each). You may ask to purchase multiple sets. Each set is priced at $87.90. Or, if you are a real bargain hunter, you can try to find a single bottle of the Paloma for $100+. ****
