Excuse me, but damn if I did
not fall off the tasting bar when I sampled these 2001 vintage wines
from Mantra's family winemaker Mike
Kuimelis yesterday! They were so GOOD! And then I was really stunned
and and almost went catatonic when I heard the price!! But, wait...I
am getting a head of myself. I have been anxiously
awaiting releases as the stellar 2001 vintage wines trickle into the
market place this Fall. Experience has taught me that often some of
the very best values can be found in the earliest releases of a
vintage. HONESTLY! I don't think there is a better California
Cabernet for the money than the 2001 Mantra
Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley in Sonoma..... and the
Zinfandel is not far behind!
Mountain grown fruit in
Alexander Valley!!? "Farms
in Berkeley"!?" If you have ever driven through the Alexander
Valley, just northwest of the Napa Valley, you'll wonder where are
those peaks and summits anyway?!
Mike's parents acquired the
Asti Alexander Valley vineyard in 1994. The vineyard is situated on
rolling to steep hillside terrain overlooking and bordering the Russian
River. Even more elevated is the Cloverdale Vineyard purchased in
1984. Both vineyards have been replanted with Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.... But prized Old Vine Zinfandel has been
maintained and is frosting on the cake! As a wino, you understand
that steeply elevated vineyards pruned for smaller yields produce the
highest quality winegrapes. Yes, less is better in fine wine
production!

Sauvignon

Both wines are produced from
vineyards that are vigorously pruned and have all green fruit thinned
at veraison (the changing of grape color as clusters ripen). The Cabernet Sauvignon under goes open and
closed top fermentation, and an extended maceration period to soften
and integrate tannins for balance and structure. The Zinfandel is
harvested ultra-ripe and allowed to cold soak in open top
fermenters for many days before yeast inoculation to retain the fresh
fruit character. Both wines are aged in a
combination of French, Hungarian and American oak.
I don't want to bore you with
too many details, as I know you are mostly interested in what the wines
taste like!
MY MANTRA
TASTING NOTES - Although my palate memory was momentarily "blacked
out" when I heard the Mantra prices, my professional ability allowed me
to recall the wine sufficiently to cast these notes -
The
Cabernet Sauvignon exudes a vibrant ripe blackcherry fruitiness with
an underlying rich roasted espresso bean and dark tobacco leaf-cedar
box nuance. Soft, but firm palate impressions extend the successful
finish!
The Zinfandel
is also extremely aromatic with a berry jam jar nose! Concentrated and
intensely "Zin", a wonderful mÈlange of winter ale spices combine
with exotic purple-raspberries to permeate and intoxicate the senses.
Please note, neither wine
exhibits any signs of under ripe fruit, or herbaceous leafy qualities
that can plague some of the wines produced from the more prolific
yielding valley floor vineyards of this region.
