ROAR!
December 11, 2003

The Santa Lucia Highlands is part of the western mountain range shielding the Salinas Valley from the Pacific Ocean. Designated as an American Viticulture Area (AVA) in 1992, the Santa Lucia Highlands produce some of the very finest Pinot Noir on the west coast. Pioneering this appellation is the legendary Gary Pisoni and his business partner Gary Franscioni. Pisoni likes to quietly brag about smuggling cuttings from the La Tache vineyard belonging to the world's most prestigious Pinot Noir producer Domaine Romanee Conti and then planting them on his 1300 foot elevated vineyard site. A few year later, Gary's Vineyard was planted with cuttings from the Pisoni property. A handful of Pinot Noir specialists annually contract with "the two Garys'" to purchase a few tons of their extremely low yielding fruit from the Pisoni Vineyard or Garys' Vineyard. The Garys like to target yields for their vineyard blocks to only roughly two tons per acre. Last vintage an acre of Pisoni fruit sold for $15,000 dollars. You do the math!

ROAR Pinot Noir is a new venture owned by Gary and Rosella Franscioni. The name ROAR comes from the sound of the fierce coastal winds and the roar of the mountain creeks that traverse the craggy, well drained soils of the vineyard. Adam and Dianna Lee of Siduri wines have collaborated with the Franscioni's to produce ROAR's premiere 2001 vintage of Pinot Noir from Garys' Vineyard and Pisoni Vineyard.
Pisoni Estate Pinot Noir comes from the Elias Block of the Pisoni Vineyard. The Elias Block is planted on its own root system, not grafted to phylloxera resistant root stock. This is risky, but Pisoni feels that root stocked vines can impart its own traits on vine growth and development. He feels only own rooted vines can truly express and capture the characteristics of Old World Burgundy.

If you are looking for the perfect holiday sparkling wine for gift giving, entertainment or personal consumption (my downfall!).....I HAVE FOUND IT!! Nino Franco's Prosecco di Valdobiaddene "Rustico" is gorgeously elegant and fresh, with a frothy and persistent effervescence, and a pleasing lively fruit that hints of white peaches and citrus with notes of bread dough. Robert Parker even gives it 90 points and calls it "unquestionably the world's finest value in high quality, Champagne look alike." We love it with Sushi, brunch, before dinner or after a romp! Order now to reserve or come by the store! $10.95 a bottle or discounts up to 15% for case purchase to bring the price down to just $9.31! Great package too!!
